Top Ways of Removing Stripped Screws

February 25, 2022 by Gigi Leave a Comment

Screw stripping can be torturous when it happens to you. You may have experienced this problem before and want to know how to remove stripped screws.

Screw stripping is a common problem that occurs in the field, but not many people know about it or even realize what causes it. Here are some tips on how to prevent screw stripping:

  1. The first thing to do is to make sure that your screws are properly tightened. If they are too loose, then there will be no resistance for them to strip out.
  2. When using power tools such as drills, saws, etc., ensure that the tool has enough torque to tighten the fastener.
  3. Make sure that the surface where you are drilling is clean and dry. Dirt and dust particles make the drill bit dull quickly and will also increase the probability of stripping.
  4. Use proper lubricants to reduce friction between the parts.
  5. Lastly, use the correct size of screwdriver. A small screwdriver won’t work well with large screws.

If you find yourself having problems with stripped screws, here are five ways of removing them:

Using a Hammer.

You can try hitting the head of the screw with a hammer until it breaks off. This method usually works best if you don’t need the screw back because the hole left by the broken-off part will allow water to enter and rust the metal.

Using Pliers.

Pliers are good at gripping things tightly so you can pull them apart. They’re also useful for pulling wires apart. To use pliers, grasp one end of the screw with the jaws of the plier while holding the other end with your free hand. Then, squeeze the handles together and slowly pull the two ends apart.

Using a Punch.

A punch is similar to a hammer except that it’s made specifically for punching holes into things. It’s commonly used for making holes in sheet metal. If you’ve ever seen a carpenter using a punch to drive nails into wood, you’ll understand why this tool helps remove screws.

To use a punch, grip one end of the screw and place it over the anvil of the punch. Then, strike the punch against the anvil, which will drive the screw into the material.

Using a Vice.

Using a vice is another way to remove stripped screws. Simply clamp the screw in the vice and turn it counterclockwise. As the screw turns, the threads will start to break off. Once all of the threads are gone, simply pull the screw out.

Using a Hacksaw.

Using a hacksaw is probably the easiest way to remove stripped screws because it doesn’t require any special equipment. All you need is a hacksaw blade and a piece of wood. Hold the blade firmly against the side of the screw and cut through it.

Hopefully, these tips will help you avoid stripping screws. Remember to always follow instructions carefully and never attempt to fix something without professional assistance.
