Politics is a fascinating landscape and it truly takes a certain type of person to move into this world as a career. There are some brilliant minds in politics, those like my local house of representatives candidate Alan Bohms, who are working tirelessly to get into a position whereby he can really bring about change. For many young people, politics seems to be this difficult area to get into, but the truth is that through hard work and the right contacts, getting into politics is not too tough, the key is staying there and forging a career from it. In order to do this, you have to be a certain type of person, and these are the kinds of people who do work in politics.
Those Who Care
Despite what we may think about our politicians, or what the media may say about them, in the main these men and women are there because they care. Most politicians start off at a local level, working hard in their own communities to make changes and to improve the way that things are. These men and women don’t do this for adulation or for their own personal goals, they are doing this because they are passionate about things and they are passionate about helping others.
Thick Skin
There is no way that you survive in this game without having thick skin, and that is something which you can say about every single person working in politics. When you rise to the position of a politician people think that it is ok to call you out, to attack you and to sully your name. The reality is however, that people do this based on your opinions and your policies, not who you are as a person. Thick skin is very much required in this job.
Belief in Democracy
Contrary to what many believe, to work in politics you have to be truly passionate about democracy and have a core belief in its success. Those who are passionate about democracy know how to accept winning and losing, and anyone who wishes to work in politics should be able to grasp this.
Dedicated
The people who work in this world are incredibly dedicated, something that we don’t always see. The hours that these people put i are incredible and that comes down to no other reason than the fact that they are truly dedicated to their careers.
Selfless
Whilst there may certainly be some politicians who are in this for themselves, although they do make up a minority, most are very selfless people. No matter how they are portrayed, so many in government have struggled for many years on a low salary, all the time trying to make their county, city or state better than how they found it. This is the essence of politicians, that desire and need for change, and being prepared to sacrifice in order to make it happen.
These are the kinds of people who go into politics.
