In an effort to relieve congestion on its network, AT&T is now offering Wi-Fi access at an outdoor wireless hot spot at Times Square in New York City.
The Wi-Fi access is only for AT&T customers, and comes at no additional cost to those customers, according to CNN.
AT&T set up its Wi-Fi network on the north side of Times Square on Seventh Avenue between 45th and 47th Streets. The company wants customers in that area to connect to the Wi-Fi there rather than AT&T’s 3G network.
The Times Square Wi-Fi is a pilot program, but if it’s successful, AT&T may roll it out further into other cities. AT&T is the only wireless phone company authorized to carry the popular, in-demand Apple iPhone, which has put an increased burden AT&T’s network in recent years.
