USC took two big steps to move on from their NCAA sanctions. They replaced Mike Garrett with Pat Haden as Athletic Director, and they decided to take down all Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo memorabilia from around the school, as well as return Bush’s Heisman trophy.
“The Trojan Family honors and respects the USC sporting careers of those persons whose actions did not compromise their athletic program or the opportunities of future USC student-athletes,” said university president-elect C.L. Max Nikias.
The school will remove murals, jerseys, and trophies from school premises in order to disassociate themselves from their former athletes. Bush still has his own Heisman trophy, and The Heisman Trust has yet to take any action to revoke his award.
Mike Garrett was the Athletic Director at USC for 17 years, and Nikias thanked him for his service, saying that he was “a tireless advocate of USC athletics.”
Pat Haden will now move into the USC Athletic Director spot. Haden played for the Trojans, and quaterbacked the team to three Rose Bowls. He also played for the St. Louis Rams from 1976-1981.
USC will not be able to play in a bowl game for two years due to the NCAA sanctions imposed on the school.
