WikiLeaks Strikes Again: 90,000 Secret Military Reports Leaked

On Sunday the New York Times released a report about the war effort in Afghanistan that was based on 90,000 pages of U.S military documents supplied by the website Wikileaks.com. According to the Wall Street Journal the reports range from day to day military operations to reports dealing with Taliban heat seeking missiles that have shot down several military aircraft.

The Obama administration has condemned Wikileaks for distributing secret reports that they claim could put more American military operations in danger. However, the administration was also quick to point out that many of the alleged war-crimes found in the documents happened during the Bush administration.

Regardless of political party lines this report paints a depressing view of the war in Afghanistan and the inability of NATO forces to stop the spread of Taliban influence. The war in Afghanistan has become the longest military conflict in U.S history and public doubts about a good ending to the war are mounting. Several lawmakers in Washington have expressed their desire to end the futile war.

These reports could seriously undermine the Democrats this fall as conservative parties focus on the highly criticized Obama Administration war plan for Afghanistan. Even with 50,000 new troops deployed to Afghanistan little support has been gained from the local population. Civilian deaths are mounting and hardening the public opinion in Afghanistan against the U.S.

Wikileaks has also confirmed that it is withholding 15,000 more pages of documents at the request of the military source but will release the reports in the near future. We can only guess what is hidden in those additional reports. Both political parties are bracing for the release of the additional documents because the war in Afghanistan could play a big role in the fall elections.

Sherrod: I Have Something to Say to President Obama

Shirley Sherrod wants President Obama to listen

Shirley Sherrod told The Today Show she was satisfied with  Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack apology, but she really wants to bend the ears of the leader of the free world.

As she explained on Today:

I really would not want the president to apologize to me. I’d love to have a conversation with him, though … You know, I’d like to talk to him a little bit about the experience of people like me. People at the grassroots level. People who live out there in rural America, people who live in the south.

Sherrod isn’t exactly jumping at her new job opportunity to work in civil rights outreach.

She told Today this morning:

I would not want to be that individual that the [Agriculture] Department and everyone is looking to to solve the issue of racism in USDA. … They talked about the Office of Outreach, and dealing with discrimination within the agency. … I haven’t seen the offer: The Secretary said he would e-mail it to me — I have not seen it yet. So before I say “no” totally, I would like to look at that, to weigh it.

Sherrod wants her time with President Obama. The big question is: does Obama want to keep this on the news cycle by going public with a meeting and a statement?

Elena Kagan Approved by Judiciary Committee – Vote Moves to the Senate

elena kagan supreme court nominee

After 540 questions, the Judiciary Committee has approved Elena Kagan’s nomination by President Obama to the Supreme Court. The Judiciary Committee voted 13-6, and now the vote will move to the full senate.

The vote was drawn down party lines, but one Republican voted in favor of Kagan. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., voted for Kagan, saying that she was not who he would have picked, but that President Obama “chose wisely.”

Other GOP senators disagree with Graham, and feel that Kagan will put her political views ahead of the law.

“Ms. Kagan’s record shows that she supports an activist judicial philosophy, and that her personal and political views drive her legal views,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

The Associated Press reports that Democrats have more than enough votes to get Kagan onto the Supreme Court. The vote is expected to take place this week, and Kagan should be sitting on the Supreme Court bench by the week’s end.

Chelsea Clinton Wedding: A-Listers Expected

Chelsea Clinton

A number of A-list celebrities are expected to be at Chelsea Clinton’s upcoming wedding to Marc Mezvinsky July 31. Chelsea’s mom, Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secreatry of State, said the family is trying to keep details of the wedding mum, state-secret style. But rumors are already swirling that the 400-member guest list could include Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg and Ted Turner. President Obama was invited, but White House representatives said he won’t be attending. However, another person who’s served as President of the United States will be there, Chelsea’s father, Bill Clinton, who will be walking his daughter down the aisle.

By all accounts, the wedding will be the closest America’s going to get to a “royal” wedding this year. The location of the wedding hasn’t been officially released, but news reports say it will likely be in Rhinebeck, N.Y., within driving distance of New York City. The bride will wear Oscar de la Renta. Chelsea, 30, met Mezvinsky, 32, when they were teenagers, but didn’t become a couple until later.

Lady Gaga Leaves Obama in Facebook Dust

Lady Gaga has officially surpassed the President of the United States in fan outreach on Facebook, with the offbeat princess of pop coming in at 9,940,462 Facebook fans. Obama has fallen firmly behind with 9,444,942.

But the trend also spans social media platforms and continues on Twitter, where Gaga’s accumulated 4,762,938 followers and Obama, despite actually tweeting at least one message on the account himself, has only 4,422,923.

Fame Count, which tracks social networking statistics, says Gaga is set to be the first living person to ever reach 10 million Facebook fans. This would not only place her well ahead of President Obama, but ahead of young pop sensation Justin Bieber and the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson.

Gaga acknowledged the outpouring of online support with a video thanking her fans for “sticking by me through the fame and the fame monster”. She also added, “Become my friend on Facebook. I’ll never forget you.” [via Sify]

Pete Stark’s Most Outrageous Moments (Five Videos)

Pete Stark

Yesterday, a video surfaced that showed Congressman Pete Stark insulting constituents who asked him questions about illegal immigration. A good number of the people in the crowd that was there to meet with their Congressman had accents that marked them as immigrants. The meeting was a picture of ethnic diversity. The audience at the meeting could not be dismissed as a bunch of angry white racists.

Was Pete Stark having a bad day? Maybe he had a migraine or some other health problem that  pushed him over the edge. With 38 years in Congress, surely Pete Stark had earned the trust and love of constituents. Is it not unfair to condemn the man on the basis of  a 10 minute video, torn from the context of a life of public service?

In all fairness, one should ask these questions. A fair look at the record showed Pete Stark to be an impassioned partisan. Pete Stark is eager to find a solution to the problem of those who have too little or no health insurance. He sees it as his mission to defend the downtrodden.  But his tendency to demonize those who oppose his solutions has gotten him into hot water.

Stark had to apologize to Congress  for saying that former President George W. Bush enjoyed getting kids blown up in Iraq. He has replied to an angry constituent with a voice mail that ended up on the evening news. He told journalist Jan Helfeld to “get the **** out of here. He has challenged a colleague in Congress to a physical fight. In a democracy, you collect votes to pass legislation. Beating up your opponents doesn’t accomplish anything.

One thing Pete Stark deserves credit for is being willing to take an unpopular position. The Secular Coalition of America had a contest in which they agreed to award $1000.00 to the person who could identify the highest atheist in national government. SCA Advisory Board Chairman Woody Kaplan interviewed almost 60 US Senators and Representatives. He found 22 atheists. Only Pete Stark was willing to be identified publicly as an atheist. Woody Kaplan noted as follows.

“At the time, twenty-two of them told me they didn’t believe in a god,” Kaplan recalls. “Twenty-one of them said, ‘You can’t tell anybody.’ One of them said you could: Congressman Pete Stark.”

A good way to gauge an elected representative as a human being is to see how he handles “hostile ” questions”. Treating the opposition as the enemy is what ultimately brought Richard Nixon down. Whether it is the dirty tricks of the Nixon presidency or the sneers of  Pete Stark, treating an opponent as an enemy is bad politics. Abraham Lincoln once said that the best way to get rid of an enemy is to turn him into a friend.

Pete Stark is honest about what he believes. Whether you vote for or against him, you know where he stands. Unfortunately, Stark has a lot of anger, and lashes out at people who disagree with him, both on the floor of Congress and in the streets and meeting halls of his district.

Those who oppose illegal immigration and Obama’s fiscal policies will need no reason to vote against Pete Stark. But those who expect their elected representatives to turn an enemy into a friend and to build a consensus might want to ask themselves if Pete Stark is the most effective advocate for their cause. There are advocates for the things Pete Stark believes in who are effective communicators and fighters for their cause. Pete Stark makes it easy to dismiss the opinions he advocates at a time when articulate and respectful partisans are needed to debate the issues that will shape our nation’s future.

To his political opponents, Stark is a sworn enemy. Stark is, however far more dangerous to those whose causes he champions. If Stark is reelected in November, he will likely provide more entertaining video footage for public enjoyment. Unfortunately, that is not what the country needs.

Offshore Drilling Ban Fight Heats Up

offshore drilling

Think the government’s temporary six-month ban on offshore drilling is a done deal? Think again. Steven Newman, president of Transocean Ltd., the company that owns the oil rig that was at the center of the BP oil spill disaster, says the temporary ban’s time frame is “arbitrary,” and wants the offshore drilling industry to be able to go back to work as soon as possible, according to The New York Daily News.

New Orleans federal judge Martin Feldman is deliberating whether or not to overturn the ban. Feldman says he’ll likely make a decision by Wednesday. White House officials say the temporary ban is needed to study how to make offshore drilling safer, following the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion April 20 in which 11 workers died, setting off the BP oil spill that has gushed an estimated 100,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico daily. But others say the world wants and needs the oil from offshore drilling, the ban is hurting industry and putting people out of work.

“This is an unprecedented industry-wide shutdown. Never before has the government done this,”

Carl Rosenblum, the attorney representing a group of companies that provide boats and equipment to the offshore drilling industry in the lawsuit to overturn the offshore drilling ban, said, according to The New York Daily News.

Oil Spill, Day 61: BP Chief Tony Hayward On Yacht

Tony Hayward

BP chief executive officer Tony Hayward was allegedly out on his $270,000 racing yacht during the Isle of Wight boat race on day 61 of the BP oil spill catastrophe that’s dumped millions of gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico.

Hayward was out with his son at the JP Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Race, BBC News reports. BP confirmed Hayward attended the event, saying the race was Hayward’s first day off since the disaster began after the oil rig explosion April 20.

Hayward’s getting criticism for attending the race from some White House and Louisiana officials and residents who say the BP chief should be doing more to deal with the spill and doesn’t deserve any time off until the crisis is resolved.

What do you think? Should Hayward be allowed a day off? If so, what kind of break should he be taking? Should he be out on his yacht at a widely watched race? Or should he have taken a more low key day off out of the public eye? Should he be taking off any days at all? How about other BP executives? Or is Hayward being unfairly criticized or falsely characterized for political reasons or by people who need a particular person to blame? What’s your opinion?

Feds To Jindal: Don’t Just Do Something! Stand There !

jindal

Bobby Jindal, the Governor of Louisiana had a simple idea. Send oil sucking barges out with trained crews. According to ABC News, the barges are now sitting idle, by order of the US Coast Guard. According to ABC News, the barges were sucking up oil up until Tuesday. Now as thousands of gallons of oil are being sewed into the Gulf every hour, the barges are being kept idle. ABC News reports as folows on the reasons why.

“The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges.”

Governor Jindal has reportedly been trying to reach the White House to get the effective and simple cleanup program going. Why Obama and Jindal do not have a direct phone line at this late stage of the crisis is not explained. The oil that was being sucked up could have been sold to offset a fraction of the costs of this crisis. But the feds seem to be able to do nothing but play obstructionist games with a governor who is doing his job.

The latest word is that the barges now have the green light. Unfortunately, a cumbersom alphabet soup of federal agencies is turning the cleanup and stoppage efforts into a bureaucratic nightmare. ABC News quotes Alabama Governor Bob Riley as follows.

The governor said the problem is there’s still no single person giving a “yes” or “no.” While the Gulf Coast governors have developed plans with the Coast Guard’s command center in the Gulf, things begin to shift when other agencies start weighing in, like the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

There should be more barges down in the Gulf. And the feds should be supporting and not obstructing governors in the area. It is tragic that bureaucratic stupidity is compounding the negligence of BP that led to this mess. We should be asking the governors what they need, help them get what they want and to get out of the way.

One last question that I have not heard asked. The US rushes to disasters all over the world. Who is rushing to help us out ? The British maybe? If not, then what are they waiting for?

Congressman Etheridge Apologizes For Assaulting Student

Congr. Bob Etheridge

Is there something in the water in North Carolina? First, we had a Tea Party hater punching a peaceful Tea Party member outside a North Carolina Congressman’s office.

Now, in a separate incident, North Carolina Congressman Bob Etheridge assaults a college student merely for trying to ask him if he supports the Obama agenda. For an elected official, the question seems fair game. Why was the congressman so “touchy”?

The Democrat lawmaker has since apologized for his “poor response,” according to CBS News.

While it’s strange that the student (if he actually is one) wouldn’t identify himself or his school, that provided no justification for the Congressman’s violent meltdown. Here’s the video:

Update: Etheridge’s Republican opponent in the upcoming November election is registered nurse Renee Ellmers, who–unlike the congressman–helps people heal from physical injuries rather than inflicting injuries on them.

London Mayor Boris Johnson: Stop Bashing Britain!

BP

The  Louisiana oil spill is not just hurting wildlife. It has been a catalyst for a marked chill in Anglo American relations. BP stock has lost $17 billion in 1 day, and $100 billion in 6 weeks. The New York Post reports as follows on fears for  the future of  BP, once known as British Petroleum and now known as “Beyond Petroleum”.

“Wall Street analysts said they’re beginning to fear what once was unthinkable — that one of the biggest, most powerful and profitable companies on the planet could actually go bust.

Houston oil trader Matt Simmons told Fortune magazine that BP might file for bankruptcy in a month — even before it finishes its three-month task of drilling two relief wells in a last attempt to stop the spill.”

There should be a way to hold BP responsible for the damage it caused without driving it under. Putting the military in charge of stopping the leak and cleaning up would be a good first step. Negotiating a settlement that would have BP making regular payments while it continues to maintain its payroll of 80,000 employees would be wise. Functioning under some sort of reorganization that would assure its continued existence would prevent a domino effect from battering an already shaky economy. The left would complain about “catering to big business” and the right would complain about big government mixing into the private sector. But this is a crisis that calls for pragmatism, creativity and not being blinded by ideology.

London’s mayor, Boris Johnson has expressed concern about Brit bashing in the Obama administration. But the concerns go way beyond hurt feelings. There are serious ramifications for the British economy emanating from the BP oil spill. The London Evening Standard reports as follows on his remarks.

“When you consider the huge exposure of British pension funds to BP and its share price, and the vital importance of BP, then I do think it starts to become a matter of national concern if a great UK company is being continually beaten up on the international airwaves.”

Driving BP into oblivion might feel therapeutic to those who are understandably angry. But there are ways to reclaim the losses from BP that are better for all concerned. The impact of  BP going under must be considered. In a moral sense, it is similar to the dilemna faced by the victorious allies in World War I. They wanted Germany to pay for starting the war. But they almost drove Germany under with crippling payment schedules. The allies ended up revising the reparations payments so that the Germans would have money to live on and to pay reparations. The analogy to BP is obvious. Punitive actions can have unforeseen consequences.

The Obama administration had been neglecting Anglo American relations for a long time before the BP disaster as noted by Dorothy Rabinowitz as follows.

One of his first reforms was to rid the White House of the bust of Winston Churchill—a gift from Tony Blair—by packing it back off to 10 Downing Street. A cloudlet of mystery has surrounded the subject ever since, but the central fact stands clear. The new administration had apparently found no place in our national house of many rooms for the British leader who lives on so vividly in the American mind.

Anyone who wants to run against Barack Obama would do well to pledge that they will have the bust of Churchill returned to Washington. It’s one thing to cluelessly give the British Prime Minister a DVD collection that will not play in Britain. It’s another matter entirely to spit in the face of a trusted ally by returning a gift steeped in historical resonance.

Wanting to figure out “whose ass to kick” should not be mistaken for decisiveness. Kneeling in the sand and squeezing tar balls does not preclude the possibility of being aloof.  Having rock stars play in the White House while Obama burns bridges and gazes resolutely into his teleprompter will not solve anything.

There is a time for symbolism and  meaningful gestures. And there is a time for substance. Does Obama know the difference?

Nuking Oil Well Gains Popular Support

Oil Spill Duck

Closing the Gulf oil well leak with a nuke sounds like a bad action cartoon. The only problem is that it has been tried successfully before by the Soviets. And it worked Mother Jones reports as follows on the latest buzz from that 24/7  town meeting known as the internet.

Let’s start with the Russians. According to Vladimir Lagovsky of Komsomolskaya Pravda (once a Soviet communist paper), “In the USSR, a few such leaks were plugged with the help of the peaceful atom.” Five leaks, all underground, were plugged thusly, the paper says—starting with a 1966 natural gas fissure in Uzbekistan. That one was snuffed using a 30-megatonkiloton blast six kilometers deep—about one and a half times the size of the Hiroshima bomb. “The idea of the method is simple,” Lagovsky writes. “An underground explosion pushes the rock, compresses it, and actually squeezes the channel well shut.”

The supporters of the nuke strategy are not raving right wing lunatics either. Christopher Brownfield, military proponent of the strategy, supports socialized medicine in the military and opposed John MCCain in 2008. The comment string on the Mother Jones article treated the nuke idea very fairly.

The stakes are very high. A hurricane could multiply the damage of the gushing oil leak exponentially. The damage to the economy and the ecosystem could be devastating.

We are hearing that we have to expect 2 more months of possibly increased oil spill. Can we wait? Is BP protecting its investment instead of the public. A decision needs to be made on using nuclear or non nuclear explosives to close the oil leak. Things are getting worse. A 22 mile long, thick oil plume has been discovered, smothering marine life in its path, according to Yahoo News. Is BP protecting its profits instead of the public? It seems that BP is in charge of closing the leak. That sounds an awful lot like privatization. That makes Obama sound like a right wing Republican. Life sure is strange.

Arizona Governor To Obama: Give Us Drones!

drone

Despite national uproar and numerous boycotts over Arizona’s new immigration law, Governor Janice Brewer isn’t backing down—she’s stepping up her fight to crack down on illegal immigration by writing a letter to President Obama requesting drones and additional helicopters to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

If Brewer gets her way, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) won’t only be patrolling over Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries, they’ll also be flying regularly over U.S. soil. Brewer wants the National Guard to reallocate UAVs and additional OH-58 helicopters to border states for surveillance.

“I would also ask you, as overseas operations in Iraq and Afghanistan permit, to consider the wider deployment of UAVs along our nation’s southern border. I am aware of how effective these assets have become in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and it seems UAV operations would be ideal for border security and counter-drug missions,”

Brewer writes in her letter to the White House.

UAVs are remotely flown aircraft. The U.S. military has several models, most famously, the Predator, but there are also the Hunter, Reaper and Global Hawk.

Drones are not only used for reconnaissance, but also for direct attack in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other places where they’re often blamed for civilian deaths. A few days after President Obama took office, January 23, 2009, missiles struck the Pakistani village of Zharki in North Waziristan along with targets in South Waziristan, according to NPR. At least 18 people were said to be killed in the attacks, which reportedly killed not only Taliban insurgents, but also civilians and/or family members of insurgents. Many believe the attacks were carried out by drones flying high above western Pakistan, NPR reports. Drones were used for direct attack more than 200 times in the past year, according to The New York Times, which is reporting that drone use is greater than ever before, having increased significantly as the war in Afghanistan has escalated.

In contrast to infantrymen sweating in blazing desert heat under fire close to the enemy, drones can be flown remotely, much like a video game, by Air Force personnel sitting in air-conditioned offices in the continental United States, thousands of miles away from their targets.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)—which has called Arizona’s new immigration law “racial profiling”—recently filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Obama administration, questioning the use of drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

“Currently, reports of the number of civilian casualties vary widely, from the dozens to the hundreds. There is also growing concern that drones could be used to target individuals who are criminal suspects who should be arrested and tried in civilian courts rather than legitimate military targets, and could thereby amount to unlawful extrajudicial killings. Serious issues have also been raised about the wisdom of using drones on policy and moral grounds. The ACLU believes that the use and proliferation of this tactic must be the subject of public scrutiny and debate,”

the ACLU says on its Web site.

White House Correspondents Dinner – It’s a Big F*&!#g Meal (VIDEO)

The White House Correspondents dinner is a “big  f*&@! meal,” according to President Obama. The opening joke set the mood for Obama’s funny and timely speech.

Obama joked about his birth certificate, the Arizona immigration bill, his portrayal in the media, and even gave a brief, but hilarious, Sarah Palin impersonation.

When he talked about the Jonas Brothers, he warned them to stay away from his daughters, saying “I have two words for you: predator drones.”

Obama also addressed how John McCain recently lost his Maverick identity at the White House Correspondents Dinner, saying “We know what happens in Arizona when you don’t have an ID. … Adios amigos.”

Obama’s jokes were poignant and funny. But if you didn’t laugh its ok. “Tonight’s jokes were brought to you by Goldman Sachs,” said President Obama. “They make money whether you laugh or not.”

Obama speaks at the White House Correspondents dinner for about 15 minutes. Then Jay Leno comes on to subdue the crowd.
