Oil Spill Goes 3-D: James Cameron Called In To Help With Oil Spill

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is getting out of hand, and BP is looking to anyone for help. The latest person to put some suggestions into the hat, is movie director James Cameron. But Cameron might actually have some good ideas to contribute.

The Associated Press reports that Cameron is meeting today with BP officials, scientists, and government officials to help and develop new strategies to clean up the oil spill.

So how can Cameron contribute?

James Cameron is an avid environmentalist, and has plenty of experience filming things deep under sea. Not only did Cameron do Titanic, but he has also down a number of underwater documentaries.

Let’s just hope that Cameron has some better ideas than just turning BP’s live video of the oil spill into a live 3-d video of the oil spill.

Avatar Breaks More Sales Records

Avatar screenshot

Avatar already broke single-day blu-ray sales records, but the James Cameron blockbuster is now smashing even more records as it continues to sell quickly at retail locations across the country. According to reports, during the past four days, the blu-ray version has sold approximately 2.7 million copies, a new record for the high-definition disks.

The previous record holder was The Dark Night, which has sold 2.5 million blu-rays over the course of 16 months. On its first day, the  Batman thriller sold about 600,000 blu-ray copies, which Avatar blew out of the water, even though this version of the movie is only available in 2D. In fact, this initial version doesn’t even have special features, which are set for release on a second edition in November.

Along with its high blu-ray sales figures, about 4 million people have picked up Avatar on DVD. The high sales for both forms of media may have something to do with the fact that distributor Fox has a new deal with Netflix and Redbox, prohibiting the rental of the movie for four weeks. In other words, if you need your Avatar fix today, you have to shell out some cash for your own copy.

It will be interesting to see if sales spike high again for the special edition version, which is aptly being released right before the holidays. A third version featuring the 3D movie will be coming out in early 2011, so it is possible that some consumers may eventually own three versions of the movie.

Avatar Sets Blu-Ray Sales Records

avatar box artJames Cameron’s Avatar hit shelves just in time for Earth Day yesterday, and fans flocked to the store to pick up what will be the first of at least three editions. Whether its eco-friendly message and Earth Day marketing helped sales or not is still unknown, but the blu-ray edition smashed all previous first-day sales records, according to Reuters, despite this version of the film lacking a third dimension.

Early estimates of day one Avatar sales show that over 4 million copies of the movie were sold yesterday alone. Of those 4 million copies, about 1.5 million were blu-ray disks, which is well above and beyond the figures for any other blu-ray sales on the first day. The previous record holder was The Dark Knight.

Avatar is being distributed by 20th Century Fox, and a spokesperson for the company says that retailers sold about 50% of their copies of Avatar on DVD and 60% for blu-ray on day one. A second edition of the movie, which will have special features (but still no 3D version) will hit stores in November. Fox estimates the release of a 3D version of Avatar in early 2011, after more homes have blu-ray players equipped to play this type of movie.

Fox estimates that Avatar will outsell Twighlight: New Moon, which is currently the best-selling movie of the year. New Moon sold about 4 million copies over its first two days and has sold about 6.5 million copies to date.

Avatar Coming to DVD on Earth Day

avatar box artIf you can’t get enough of the Na’vi, good news : you soon won’t have to spend $20 every time you want to see it in theatres. 20th Century Fox announced today that the movie will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD in April, coinciding with Earth Day to promote the film’s eco-friendly message.

Big-budget movies are typically released on Tuesdays, and this year’s Earth Day celebration on April 22 falls on a Tuesday. Fox is certainly hoping that the holiday release date will help hype the movie, which quickly lost steam when Alice in Wonderland hit the box office. This first release will be in 2D, which might prove a slightly lackluster sales performance, especially since its three Oscars came in Cinematography, Visual Effects and Art Direction. It will also be a “bare bones” version, containing only the movie.

You’ll have to shell out $19.99 for the DVD and $29.99 for the Blu-ray in April, but if you’re willing to wait until November, you can purchase a multi-disk version that includes not just the movie, but also special features like deleted scenes and commentaries. There’s a third version set to come out in 2011 as well – I’m guess in 3D – so be prepared to pull out your wallet at least three times if you’re a true fan of the movie.

And if you love James Cameron flicks, mark your calendars; Titanic is coming back to the big screen, this time in 3D, in Spring 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking in 1912.

‘Avatar’ DVD Promises Alien Sex

Avatar DVD promises alien sex scene.
Flyaway box office hit Avatar has a surprise up its sleeve for special edition DVD viewers, director James Cameron recently revealed during a press conference. The movie will feature a sex scene between Jake Sully and Neytiri. The scene was cut originally because Avatar was intended for a family friendly audience in theatres.

The level of raciness involved may not astound anyone, however. Alien sex in Avatar is, according to the actress who played Neytiri, Zoe Saldana, very much like the act of alien communication. In Avatar aliens speak by locking hair with various species to “sync”, or communicate.

Saldana said of the sex scene, “If you sync to your banshee and you’re syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? [...] It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.”

James Cameron told the press, “We had it in and we cut it out so that will be something for the special edition DVD – if you want to see how they have sex.” [via Ananova]
