The sixth seeded Juan Martin del Potro pulled off a stunning win over Roger Federer in 5 sets at the 2009 U.S. Open.  Del Potro won with the following scores: 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. The event was witnessed by a sold out New York crowd.

Serena Williams not only cost herself the 2009 U.S. Open after an alleged violent outburst towards the line judge who called a foot fault on the defending champion, she was also fined $10,000 by the U.S. Open for unsportsmanlike conduct, plus an additional $500 fine for racket abuse.

The 2009 U.S. Open has seen it’s fair share of surprises, first their was Melanie Oudin who entered the tournament unranked and worked her way into the quarter finals. Now there’s Kim Clijsters, a huge underdog who not only went head to head with Serena Williams in the semifinals, she defeated her.

The fairytale  has ended for Melanie Oudin, the American teenager who gained a new bevy of fans throughout the 2009 U.S. Open. The unranked 16 year old rose through the tournament after defeating 3 top ranked Russian players and a 4th player in her rise to the quarter finals at this years Open.

Melanie Oudin has been having the tournament of her life, the teen sensation has already taken on and beaten 4 players during the U.S. Open. Not bad for an unranked player who many spectators have never heard of.

Kiim Clijsters completed an impressive win against Na Li in two sets on Tuesday to move on to the Semifinals of the U.S. Open.

Melanie Oudin is having what I’m sure she would call the week of her life.  The unseeded Oudin defeated Nadia Petrova 1-6, 7-6 and 6-3 to advance to the tournaments quarterfinals.  Petrova was Oudin’s 4th win in the tournament.
