Paul Shirley, the former NBA player and ESPN column blogger was fired today after he stated in a public forum that he doesn’t believe in helping earthquake victims.
According to PopEater Shirley wrote a scathing denunciation of the Haiti earthquake relief efforts on FlipCollective.com. On the site he wrote “I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort…And I probably will not.” while adding “Shouldn’t much of the responsibility for the disaster lie with the victims of the disaster?” He finally concluded with “How could humans do this to themselves.”
To themselves? Are you being serious? This is the type of stupidity I would expect from Rush Limbaugh, not from an ESPN columnist! Explain to us Shirley how they “did this to themselves.”
After word of his acts surfaced ESPN on Wednesday issued the following statement: “[Shirley's views] do not at all reflect our company’s views on the Haiti relief efforts. He will no longer contribute to ESPN.”
Good for you ESPN and GOOD BYE Paul Shirley.

You had to put a dig on Rush, didn't ya? You left-wingers are so easy to identify these days. BTW…. I'm not donating to Haiti either. We have given that country Billions over the last 20 years and it's been nothing but a waste.

STFU@ chad from Tampa. You along with Paul Shirley are both huge pieces of human waste!
Everybody “puts a dig” on Rush because he's a lying idiot. If you decided to research the things he says for yourself, you'd know that. And when we gave “Billions over the last 20 years” to Haiti we were giving it to the upper class in order to run sweatshops for Kmart and other similar companies where women work 70 hour work weeks for a few dollars. I'm sure as a christian conservative that doesn't bother you though…
I'm just waiting to see the fat settlement check Paul Shirley gets after taking ESPN to the Court House.
Whether or not you agree with his opinion's/statement's – at least within the confines of the United States he is not only entitled to having them, but to sharing them and has certain protections granted for the appropriation there-of. Particularly as they do nothing to impede the common good.
Dee, it is the exact type of thing Rush would say. Of course he would say it for publicity, Shirley is just an idiot.
Liberal and proud of it, but it is what Limbaugh would say, not for the same reasons as Shirley who is just a complete idiot did, but because he's a publicity whore.
Actually Heero, ESPN is allowed to protect their companies image in any way they see fit, and as at least part of their company runs in “at-will” states they are afforded the right to fire their employees for any reason they see fit.
The fallacy that a public employee can state their opinions when their job is to convey a certain message for a company in that public forum is just that….a fallacy.
On top of that, I guarantee you he has a contract protecting their right to protect their image, it's standard for mass communication companies.
Chad you realize from a strategic military point of view, given Haiti's location and proximity to the United States, it's money well spent don't you? Look what almost happened in Cuba during the cold war.
Haiti was able to raise $38,000 for the U.S. after Katrina. A microscopic amount by our standards, but try to put that in perspective. Allowing for relative differences in GNP and population, that would be like the US donating $383 million. Awesome
AGREED!!!!
Indyposted…
Your common sense comments are wasted on these idiots!!!!
Yeah, sadly they are. I just like how facts are thrown around that make no sense and have no backing.

um, you need to do a little constitutional law research mr. heero. Shirley has protection against the government impeding his rights to freedom of speech, but as a representative of ESPN because he is a contributor, he isn't afforded those same protections from being reprimanded or being fired simply because he has the right to express his opinions.
I'm glad he's gone as well. But Jimmy, since you are jabbing Limbaugh, sure you don't want to blame Bush for the for the quake?
Sure why not. BTW, I always blame Limbaugh, just like he always blames liberals for everything that's wrong in this country, even when no direct link is provided, it's like payback. See the logic there Johnny boy.
