The Iranian Soccer Federation this week accidentally sent a message to their Israeli counterparts wishing them a happy new year. Surprisingly they received this message back: “Happy new year to all the good people of Iran.”
According to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Football Federation director of foreign relations, the message was not meant to be sent to Israeli officials. In response, director Mohammad Ali Ardebili quickly responded over Iranian Army Radio that the message was a mistake that should never have reached Israeli officials.
According to YNetNews he stated:
“It is a greeting sent to every country in the world,” Ardebili said. He quickly then inquired: “Are you talking from Israel? I can’t speak with you. It’s a mistake, it’s a mistake.”
Amir Navon, the head of Israel Football said his office responded in kind with a *wink* added at the end of their message. They also wished the Iran team a happy soccer year.
While the entire fiasco may have been a mistake, it’s amazing how one act of mistaken communication can get the two sides talking, even if only for a moment.
