Zack Greinke Named American League Cy Young Winner 2009

The Baseball Writers Association has crowned Kansas City Royals player Zack Greinke as the American League Cy Young Winner.

The association overwhelmingly gave Greinke the prize with 25 of 28 first place votes for a total of 134 points. His closest competitor, Felix Hernandez of Seattle took two first place votes and finished with 80 points. While Justin Verlander of Detroit received the last vote.

Greinke finished the season with 16 wins and 8 losses with a 2.16 ERA. He also logged 242 stirekouts through 229 1/3 innings of play. Greinke also had 4.83 runs of support, the least among all American League pitchers who had played in 140 innings or more of play.

Included in his record are three losses and seven no-decisions in games he gave up two or fewer runs. His 4.83 runs of support were the lowest among 37 American League pitchers with 140 or more innings.
