While CC Sabathia struggled, Cliff Lee looked like he was playing a pick up game with some friends in his back yard, it was almost hard to believe it was game 1 of the World Series. Yet it was game 1 and the Phillies took it easily with a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees.
After the game Lee let the press know that he definitely didn’t feel at ease, regardless of his demaeanor
“To be honest I really never have been nervous in the big leagues. This is what I wanted to do my whole life,”
It was an impressive outing for Lee who struck out 10 batters without a walk, while allowing only 6 hits. He was also the first pitcher since Don Newcombe way back in 1949 to strike out 10 or more batters in a Series game with no walks. It also took his postseason this year to 3-0 with an impressive .54 ERA.
Ryan Howard also showed why he was the NL MVP when he doubled twice and drove in the final run in a game that was dominated so much by the Phillies that many New York fans left the teams new $1.5 billion stadium before the final out even occured. Given the price of tickets to attend a ball game in New York that early dismissal spoke volumes for Phillies dominance of game one and more specifically Lee’s performance.
The Yankee to do the most “damage” against Lee? Derek Jeter with a rather lousy double and two singles.
Game 2 will be played Thursday night with Pedro Martinez facing off against A.J. Burnett. [photo: artolog]
