If you can’t get enough of the Na’vi, good news : you soon won’t have to spend $20 every time you want to see it in theatres. 20th Century Fox announced today that the movie will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD in April, coinciding with Earth Day to promote the film’s eco-friendly message.
Big-budget movies are typically released on Tuesdays, and this year’s Earth Day celebration on April 22 falls on a Tuesday. Fox is certainly hoping that the holiday release date will help hype the movie, which quickly lost steam when Alice in Wonderland hit the box office. This first release will be in 2D, which might prove a slightly lackluster sales performance, especially since its three Oscars came in Cinematography, Visual Effects and Art Direction. It will also be a “bare bones” version, containing only the movie.
You’ll have to shell out $19.99 for the DVD and $29.99 for the Blu-ray in April, but if you’re willing to wait until November, you can purchase a multi-disk version that includes not just the movie, but also special features like deleted scenes and commentaries. There’s a third version set to come out in 2011 as well – I’m guess in 3D – so be prepared to pull out your wallet at least three times if you’re a true fan of the movie.
And if you love James Cameron flicks, mark your calendars; Titanic is coming back to the big screen, this time in 3D, in Spring 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking in 1912.
