Lower Merion, the Pennsylania school district that provided students with webcam enabled laptops and then allegedly used them to spy on students at home are now under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The school, which activated the webcams 42 times, claims that the installed spyware was only meant to be activated when laptops were stolen and that only two employees had access to the software needed to activate the program.
What doesn’t make sense is that the school disciplined a child for their “at home behavior” after showing the student and their parents webcam stills of the child at home. That move doesn’t sit well with their “only when stolen” activation stance.
Lower Merion is currently facing a civil class action lawsuit from students and their parents, which may be the least of their worries should a ‘wiretapping” or other similar case stick. [WashingtonPost]
