Plans for Madonna’s new Malawian all-girls school are moving forward, despite the fact that 200 villagers will be forced to move from their homes under the plan.
According to PopCrunch, the Malawian government ordered the residents of Chinkhota to move so the $15 million girls school could begin construction. According to the Associated Press Madonna has already broken ground on the new construction which is expected to be completed by early 2011.
The government told villagers in a statement:
“The government allowed you to occupy this land because there was no project yet, but now that Madonna wants to build you a school you have to give way. This school is the future of our children. You are lucky that Madonna has compensated you for your houses, gardens and trees.”
Village head Binson Chinkhota believes the school is a move forward for the area and has said:
“We have been compensated and this school is a pride for us as it is the future of our children.”
Even with Chinkhota’s blessing some residents are still infuriated that they have been forced from their land.
Anjimile Mtila-Oponyo, principal for the new school, says villagers were paid more than 16 million kwacha (about $115,000) to help them start their new lives in new homes, a considerable amount for residents.
